Today’s Reading: Psalm 126
Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.
Psalm 126:6
What are you building?
This famous verse gets lots of attention for how God provides, turning weeping into joy. It’s beautiful and so characteristic of the God who deeply loves us.
But consider the sower. He goes to the fields to plant, to build up; at least, with hope for that. He cannot know what the future will hold as he sows. Will the weather be favorable or lay waste to the crop? Will pests stay at bay or eat the crop alive? Will there be a harvest or not? And if there is a harvest, how plentiful will it be?
The sower doesn’t know. But he goes to sow with hope, and that hope gives confidence. This is not a hope born of knowing he’ll get exactly what he wants: a good harvest. It’s a hope born of knowing that, whether the harvest is good or not, whether the harvest comes at all or not, God will provide.
Think
What seeds are you sowing with hope today?
Pray
Give God your hopes in prayer, afterwards saying the famous prayer of C.S. Lewis: whatever happens, “I am equally in your good hands.”
Do
Sow for the future! Do something that moves toward what you hope for.
Think, Pray, Do. As we respond in faith to scripture, God moves in power through our minds, hearts, and bodies. We are the people of God. Thanks for reading today. Go in peace. Amen.
